Siberian cocklebur is a spring grass that grows in parts of Asia, Europe, and North America. The plant invades farmlands and can be poisonous to domestic animals and humans.
Cockleburs (Xanthium) are a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to the Americas and eastern Asia.
Cockleburs are coarse, herbaceous annual plants growing to 20-47 in (about 50-120 cm) tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, with deeply toothed margins. Some species, notably X. spinosum, are also very thorny with long, slender spines at the leaf bases.
The flowers are of two types; One, in short terminal branches, produces only pollen. The other, in clusters in the axils of the leaves, produces seed.
Fusiform or ovoid, 1~1.5 cm long, 4~7 mm in diameter. Externally yellowish-brown or yellowish-green, with hooked spines throughout. Summit with 2 relatively thick spines, separated or linked up, base with a fruit stalk scar. Texture hard and flexible, the centre of transverse section showing a septum and 2 loculi, each having an achene. Achene slightly fusiform, relatively even at one side, apex with a protruding remains of style, pericarp thin, grayish-black, with longitudinal wrinkle. Testa membranous, pale grey, cotyledons 2, oily. Odour, slight; taste, slightly bitter.
